What you can do
Set a target tool life on a serialized assembly so CRIBWISE asks operators for the consumed tool life at every return, and sends the assembly for service automatically once the target is reached.
An assembly that has reached its target tool life cannot be picked again until the service is performed and the consumed tool life is reset to 0.
Before you start
- The item must be a serialized assembly.
- You need an internal vendor to perform the service – only internal vendors can be selected as service vendors for an assembly.
- Decide the target tool life and the unit it is tracked in.
Quick start
Experienced users – set up tool life tracking in 4 steps:
- Open the assembly detail and go to the Supplier tab.
- Activate Service and select the service type and internal vendor.
- Enter the target tool life and its unit.
- Save the assembly.
Steps
Step 1 — Set up tool life for an assembly
- Open the detail of the serialized assembly.
- On the Supplier tab, activate Service.
- Select the type of service and the vendor who performs it.
- Enter the target tool life and the units it is tracked in.
- Save.
Success: From now on the consumed tool life must be entered at every return of any serialized instance of this assembly – except when the instance is returned as not used.

Note: Every new serialized instance created during restock or assign, and every instance restocked back from service, starts with a consumed tool life of 0.
Step 2 — Enter consumed tool life during a return
- Return the serialized assembly as used.
- In the extra wizard step, enter the consumed tool life.
- Complete the return flow.
The entered tool life may exceed the remaining tool life for that instance.
The return flow asks for consumed tool life when tracking is active.
Important: Consumed tool life is recorded only when the return is finished and the assembly is placed in a location. An interrupted return leaves the consumed tool life unchanged.
Moving a picked item to another cost allocation also asks for the consumed tool life. If the target is met or exceeded during that operation, the assembly changes status to For service and is put on the service list the next time it is returned to the device.
Step 3 — Check tool life of assemblies
- Open the serialized item overview.
- Make sure the columns Tool life remaining, Tool life consumed and Tool life status are shown.

How tool life is reset
Consumed tool life is set to 0 automatically when:
- a new assembly is created during the assign flow,
- a new assembly is created during the restock flow, or
- an assembly is restocked from service.
Warning: The consumed tool life of an assembly cannot be reset manually.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
| The return flow never asks for consumed tool life. | The assembly is returned as not used, or tracking is not active on it. | Return it as used, and check that Service and a target tool life are set on the Supplier tab. |
| The service vendor cannot be selected. | Only internal vendors can service an assembly. | Select an internal vendor, or create one. |
| An assembly cannot be picked any more. | Its consumed tool life reached the target, so it is set for service. | Perform the service and restock the assembly from service – that resets its tool life to 0. |
| A return was cancelled and the tool life did not change. | Consumed tool life is recorded only when the return finishes. | Complete the return so the assembly is placed in a location. |
