Ask a manufacturer what system they use to manage their CNC tooling, and the answer is often ‘some kind of inventory software’.
Ask what that software does, and the description can cover anything from a basic spreadsheet to a fully integrated tool management platform. The terminology gets used loosely, and the distinction between tool inventory software and CNC tool management software tends to get lost in the process.
The distinction is important, though, because the two approaches have different scopes, serve different operational needs and produce different outcomes. Understanding where one ends and the other begins is a useful starting point for any machine shop assessing whether its current setup is doing enough.
They start in the same place
There is enough common ground between these two types of software to explain why the terms get conflated.
Both track what tools are in stock, record locations, manage check-in and check-out, and flag when replenishment is needed. A tool inventory system does this well, and for some operations that coverage is sufficient.
