How to assign an item to a location on the Shop Floor Interface

What you can do

Assign an item from the catalog to a specific stock location so it can be picked, returned, and restocked at that device.

Before you start

  • You need a user account with the Assign item permission enabled in your user group.
  • You need access to the Shop Floor Interface on a device connected to your storage.
  • The item must already exist in the system before you can assign it to a location.

Note: If you do not see the Assign item option in the Stock Management menu, your administrator has not granted you the required permission.


Quick start

Experienced users — assign an item in 6 steps:

  1. Tap Stock management → Assign item.
  2. Select the item from the list.
  3. Select a storage device (e.g., A or B).
  4. Select a stock location (e.g., A-01-01-01).
  5. Set max quantity, order point, and min quantity (durables only).
  6. Tap Confirm, set location quantities, and tap Save.

Steps

Step 1 — Open the assign item wizard

  1. On the SFI main menu, tap Stock management.
  2. Tap Assign item.

Step 2 — Select an item

  1. Browse the item list or use the search bar to find the item by number or name.
  2. Tap the item you want to assign.

Tip: Use the barcode scanner icon next to the search bar to scan an item barcode instead of searching manually. When using a barcode scanner or a physical keyboard the search field doesn’t need to have the focus, the SFI will automatically recognize that the input is for searching.


Step 3 — Select a storage device zone

  1. The screen shows available zones on the device (e.g., A and B).
  2. Tap the zone where you want to assign the item.

Step 4 — Select a stock location

  1. The screen lists all locations in the selected zone, showing how many items are already assigned and whether the location handles recycling.
  2. Tap the location where you want to assign the item (e.g., A-01-01-01).
  3. If no locations are free or you want to create a new, tap the Create new location button

Tip: Tap Show empty locations to filter the list to only unoccupied locations.

Select a stock location. Use “Show empty locations” to filter, or “Create new location” to add one.


Step 5 — Set device options

  1. Use the + and buttons to set the following values:
Field What to enter
Max quantity The maximum number of pieces this location should hold.
Order point When stock drops to this level, an automatic order is triggered.
Min quantity (only for durables) The minimum stock to keep as safety stock.
  1. Tap Confirm.

The wizard advances to Location options.

Important: Quantities must be multiples of the item’s package size. The screen shows a reminder: “Quantities must match package size of Item.”


Step 6 — Set location options and save

  1. Set the Physical max quantity and initial Quantity for the location.
  2. Tap Save.

Success: The item is now assigned to the selected location. It appears in the Manage items list and is available for picking, returning, and restocking at this location.


Next steps

After assigning an item:

  1. Manage the assignment — Edit max quantities or order points later.
  2. Restock the item — Add physical stock to the new location.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
Assign item tile is missing from the menu Your user group does not have the Assign item permission Ask your administrator to enable the permission in Admin Portal → User Groups
Confirm button is grayed out The quantity values do not match the item’s package size Adjust quantities to be a multiple of the package size shown on screen
Item does not appear in the list The item has not been created in the system yet Create the item in Admin Portal first, then try again
No locations appear for the selected zone All locations already have the maximum number of items Tap Show empty locations or create a new location
